Information about hiring a road bike in Tenerife; Bicycles & cycling equipment available for rent

Is it possible to hire a bike with Tenerife-Training?

Yes, Absolutely! Bicycle hire is now our main business here in Tenerife. We offer really great road and MTBs in all sizes. All hire bikes come well prepared and are supplied with a mini tool kit - please check here for pricing and more info. We are also trialling a free island-wide delivery/pickup service.

It's best to pre-book your bike(s) in Tenerife once you know your arrival dates; you can make a bike hire reservation enquiry using our online booking form.

What are the accepted payment methods?

Please note that you may be asked to leave a 10-20% deposit during the peak season, especially if you are staying in the South of Tenerife. This will secure your hire bike(s) on your requested dates during your stay in Tenerife.

We accept the following international methods of payment for your reservation deposit: all major credit cards, paypal or IBAN bank transfer. The full or remaining balance must be be payed upon delivery of the bike(s). We do accept both credit/debit cards via our mobile bank terminal as well as Euros cash.

Can I rent other cycling equipment with Tenerife-Training??

We have a wide selection of pedals available for rent, along with helmets and shoes. We even have a few seapost-mounted racks for light touring. We can also supply PortaBike carriers for your hire car. Busted a wheel while you’re here & need a spare? No problem- rent one of ours! If you're staying in El Puerto & the airlines have lost all your luggage or you've forgotten something like your shoes or your water bottles... yes we can always arrange replacements. If you have any other requests, please e-mail.

Who's it for?

Let's just say if you enjoy challenging rides, you’ve come to the right place! Due to the fantastic warm climate & spectacular geology, it's the perfect cycle-training destination! Where else can you climb nonstop from sea level to 2300m and back, in a single day's ride? You won't find that sort of terrain in either Mallorca or Lanzarote.

Tenerife has always been a popular toursist destination and is becoming more developed. Yes, cars are to be expected - although it has to be said that they are super-cyclist friendly, always giving a full metre (or more) of space when overtaking. Nevertheless, we believe that Tenerife is a very worthwhile destination for cycle-tourists, provided you're already fairly fit.

The aim of our Bike Hire service is to change people's perception of a rental bike service. We always strive to provide the best possible range of frame sizes and we're only too happy to customise our bicycles to fit different riders' needs. We now specialise in extra small and extra large road and MTBs; everything from 41cm to 65cm frames are currently available for people 150 ~ 200cm tall. For a list of other great reasons to rent, check out this link.

What do I need to bring with me?

Don't forget the following: cycling shorts, jersey, helmet, shoes, sunglasses, gloves, suncream, water bottles and any tools that are specific to your bike. Many people don't realise how cold you can get descending from high altitude for extended periods of time, so I'll say this: during winter months, you will also need to bring a pair of lycra arm & leg warmers.

If there is snow present on Mt Teide, cold weather is to be expected. So if you've decided to tackle Mt Teide, a windproof jacket is also a necessity especially during the winter months. Windproof gloves are also preferable; if you have them, it's worth bringing them if only for that one descent (unless your fingers enjoy a bit of hypothermia at the end of a ride). It's best to check out the weather page for more detailed information about expected temperatures and adverse weather conditions (or else ask Les personally).

If you're hiring one of our bikes, preferably bring your own clipless shoes & helmet, although we do have this equipment for hire also. We can always supply a pedal spanner. If you have a preference for certain energy bars & drinks, we recommend that you bring those along too.

Where can I pick up the bike?

This is an internet business - so there is no shop as such. We actually work from our home & garage. Minimising our overheads means we are able to provide the best quality bikes. For that reason, we prefer to deliver bikes to El Puerto & surrounding regions. Bicycle pickup is by appointment only; if you can arrange your own transport, we can always email you detailed directions and a map to help you find our exact location.

What about accommodation?

This a not a bed and breakfast establishment. We organise the cycling equipment, leaving your accommodation to other providers. The last thing this place needs is more hotels and apartments. However, we can advise you about recommmended hotels, apartments & villas in the most convenient locations here in the North of Tenerife.

Got a suggestion or need further information?

Please contact us for further info, we receive loads of queries. We answer all e-mails promptly & we’re happy to provide you with further information to help your quest. By far the fastest way to get a response is to make a simple telephone call. We can provide detailed knowledge of local roads and their condition, weather phenomena, and any other local information (proximity to beaches etc). We speak fluent Spanish, which is a great help if you need anything.

Love the website?

When I first dreamed of cycling in Tenerife back in '05 & contemplated riding here, I noticed a distinct lack of cycling-related information about Tenerife on the internet. It is my goal now to fill that void and become the primary source of information for cycling in Tenerife! You can find loads more information about cycling in the Canary Islands on the new sub-site. There you can also find further links to other relevant cycling websites & blogs.

If you're interested in what daily life is like for a local (my integration into this strange place), you can visit the section I call "Island Life".

I've also initiated a new Tenerife Cycling Forum, which is dedicated to the local Canarian cyclists. There you can leave your ride reports & comments etc. Note that much of the forum appears in Spanish, so if you need help registering, please ask and I will set up an account for you in English.

If you’ve found the website or our detailed answers useful in planning your trip, drop us a line or sign the online guestbook. A little appreciation and encouragement goes a long way.

Happy Cycling,
Leslie.
