This is not Australia, so riding on the three Tenerife freeways TF1, TF2 and TF5 is prohibited by spanish traffic law.
Contrary to what some people say, they're classified as "autopistas" not "autovías", and therefore, riding in the breakdown lane in not permitted.
In any case, riding on freeways is not recommended... not after being in the same car with the instructor and another learner while it's their turn to do their .
Around the resorts, you'll probably get away with it for a few kilometres, to get you out onto the other roads. Just don't ride on them continuously.
There is one exception: TF5 between Los Realejos and Icod de Los Vinos. This road has only 2 lanes and is used by the majority of local cyclists for training purposes. Why? Because it has a cycling lane in both directions, and although the route undulates, it is still relatively flat since it hugs the coast. While very picturesque, it is getting busier all the time, so be aware that this particular road has a high density of traffic.
But if ever a guardia civil officer politely tells you that riding on a freeway is not permitted, starts telling you you should be wearing a reflective jacket, then orders you to take the next exit, don't argue , or they will fine you!!
